NEWSLETTER . NOVEMBER 2007.
Dear customer, Welcome to our autumn newsletter. What a frustrating summer we have had this year! It started so well back in
April with record temperatures in the high 70’s and then gradually went
downhill from there. May wasn’t too
bad, but June was a washout and then came July – torrents of water and
the well documented floods. Our livestock
were paddling around in water for 2 or 3 weeks and there was nothing we
could do about it. This was an extremely anxious time for us, because at
that stage, we had flooded fields and no hay or silage had been made for
winter-feed. Who would choose to be a farmer?? Well we did actually, so at
times like this, you just have to make the best of things. August was
slightly better weather-wise but the ground was too wet to take machinery,
so still no winter feed. However, patience paid off – the ground was
just dry enough and it was all systems go for silage, hay and straw all at
once! – 26 hours needed in a day! Just as we thought things were
looking up, we heard the worst news possible for farmers – foot and
mouth disease had returned to Britain! It’s really no wonder that
suicide rates in farming are the highest of any industry! However, we take the view that
whatever is thrown at us, we find a way through it and, of course, we
have. And that’s without mentioning Blue – tongue disease. We now have enough winter-feed
and bedding for all the animals for winter and life on the farm is
returning too normal. Amazingly, throughout the
summer, Jamie and his assistant have only missed one farmers market in
Gloucester – including the famous Friday we had 4 inches of rain! They
definitely deserve a medal for this, as well as almost doubling the number
of our tasty lamb & beef burgers sold from the barbeque. So well done
to them. Also, Jamie has continued to
expand meat sales throughout this difficult period, with more restaurants
and pubs using our superb salt-marsh lamb & beef. In fact, we are
selling so much now that we have had to put up a new shed at the farm so
that there is enough supply for next year. Finally, we would like to
thank you – the customer, for supporting us through this difficult year
and helping us to expand sales beyond our own targets. We
enclose our Christmas order details below for your perusal and would
like to take this opportunity to wish you a merry Christmas and a
peaceful 2008
