Farm History

Much of the land which we farm was reclaimed from the River Severn in various stages over many centuries.

The first area to be reclaimed contains remnants of Anglo-Saxon ridge and furrow and is designated a Special Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI). It is believed this work was done as early as the 7th century.

The remainder of the land was brought back into production in progressive segments between the 13th and 18th centuries. Our ancestors must have improved their techniques as this later land is much drier and more productive than the Anglo-Saxon efforts.

The Cullimore family came to Newhouse Farm in 1879 when Ernest Cullimore was ten years old, he took over the farm from his father Ambrose and ran it until he died in 1943 when his son Godfrey continued the tradition. Godfrey remained a keen partner in the business together with his son John until his death in 2005. It was at this time that Jamie, Godfrey’s grandson, became a partner making him the fifth generation to farm at Newhouse.

We are extremely proud of our strong family tradition spanning 130 years.
